Wrestling season continues at Junior State
A week after their state tournament, five members of the Greybull-Riverside wrestling team were back on the mat, competing at the Wyoming Amateur Wrestling Association (WAWA) Junior State Championship.
Gabby Dowling, Bennett Sanford, Reece Whisenant, Nikoah Sorensen and Curtis Strohschein attended as representatives of the Greybull-Basin Athletic Club.
Gabby Dowling, at 140, took first place in freestyle and second place in folkstyle, going a combined 3-1.
On the boys side, Bennett Sanford wrestled nine times, winning six and losing three at 138 pounds. He placed second in folkstyle, third in freestyle.
Whisenant, wrestling at 150, posted a 5-1 record, finishing first in folkstyle and second in freestyle.
State champion heavyweight Curtis Strohschein continued his winning ways, claiming victory in all his matches to sweep top honors in the freestyle and folkstyle divisions.
Nikoah Sorensen, wrestling at 165, placed sixth in both divisions, going 1-6 over the weekend.
Rob Nuttall, head coach of Greybull-Riverside, called it “a fun way to close out the year, and for some, experience something completely new that adds to their toolbox for folkstyle wrestling in the high school season.”
