Husky Boys go 1-3 on the week
It was a lot of time on the court for the Huskies this week with a game on Tuesday against Rocky Mountain and the Wrangler Invite over the weekend.
The game against Rocky started off slow for the Huskies, who struggled offensively and ended the first half down 30-9. They came back strong during the second half and outscored the Grizzlies 18-13 in the third quarter and 17-8 in the fourth quarter but it was too late and the Huskies lost 51-44. Casey McNiven led the team with 16 points and five steals. Jordan Michaels added 10 points and seven rebounds, with Bassett leading rebounds with 10 and added four points.
Burlington started off the tournament in a rematch against Saratoga. Despite missing C. McNiven and with Bruce McNiven and Weston Gotfredson under the weather, the Huskies put up a good fight in the back-and-forth battle but couldn’t come back from an early Saratoga lead, losing 78-60. Rykael Andrew led the team with 14 points. Michaels contributed 12 points and nine rebounds and Bassett had 11 points.
“While we have dropped two games to Saratoga, we are optimistic we can beat them when it counts later in the season, when we can be at full strength,” said Coach Kirby Winland.
The Huskies beat 2A Kemmerer, 57-54. C. McNiven had a big game with 27 points, 12 rebounds and three steals. Michaels contributed 12 points and Toby McNulty added eight points.
Cokeville was the final opponent of the weekend and the Panthers outscored the Huskies 60-47. C. McNiven led the team with 17 points. Bassett added 4 points and 8 rebounds and Andrew contributed 7 rebounds and 3 points.
“With both Cokeville and Saratoga we fell behind early and ultimately ran out of time,” said Winland. “But overall our team showed yet again that we are willing and able to battle when playing from behind. We had formidable play from a couple of our men off the bench. Howard McNiven and Rykael Andrew were both standouts on defense. Howard did a great job with intense on-ball defense and Rykael stepped up and took some big charges for us this weekend. Both skills we love to see on the basketball court.”
The Huskies will be back in action after the break, in Meeteetse on January 5th.
