Big Horn Basin Healthcare Coalition provides advanced training for medical community

Emergency medical technicians, paramedics, nurses, advanced practice providers, and physicians from around Wyoming and nearby states are gathering in Cody Thursday, April 4 through Sunday, April 7, to receive procedural skills training offered by the Big Horn Basin Healthcare Coalition (BHBHCC).
The BHBHCC consists of members from hospitals, emergency medical services, public health, emergency management, and other representatives from Hot Springs, Washakie, Big Horn, and Park counties.
According to Elise Lowe, MD and BHBHCC Readiness and Response Coordinator,
“Procedural skills expand our capacity to care for children and adults in rural America.  Low patient volumes make these skills difficult to maintain,” according to Elise Lowe, MD and BHBHCC readiness and response coordinator.
Training opportunities being offered include Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NPR), and STABLE, a program focused on the post-resuscitative/pre-transport management of a newborn.  STABLE stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program – Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional Support.  Additionally, a full day will be devoted to critical skills stations using instructors from all over the country.
Classes will focus on providing hands-on practice for life-saving skills that are not commonly used in rural America, due to low call volumes. Education tracks include both pediatric and adult options.
LaRae Dobbs, the Big Horn County emergency management director, said the raining “will allow more medical personnel to receive training that is usually only received by traveling to another state.
“The Big Horn Basin Healthcare Coalition has worked hard to make this happen, and we are very excited to see this come to fruition.”
