Huskies celebrate 988 Awareness Day

September is Suicide Awareness month and September 8th is 988 Day, a national initiative created to raise awareness about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline. This year’s theme is “No Judgment… Just Help.” 

In Burlington, the Huskies celebrated on Friday. During homeroom, teachers led discussions among students, introducing the day and its importance. Students then brainstormed and created sidewalk chalk awareness posters. 

“We have drawings, sayings and quotes in the front of the school and on the cement by the buses,” said Phil Olson, the school counselor. 

Students also worked with the middle and high school student councils to build a “school friendship chain” to encourage unity and support. 

“I think this is a great way for students, teachers and the community to recognize that help is always available when a mental health crisis occurs, and 988 is the tool we have to speak with someone right away,” said Olson. “As Wyoming continues to unfortunately lead the nation in suicide rates each year, I hope that we can also lead the charge with increasing mental health awareness and utilizing the resources that are available to us.”
