Random things that have happened to my feet

I am known to my family as a “Barefoot Sue.” I rarely, if ever, wear shoes in the house. It is actually worse since we moved into the cabin. When we lived in the mobile, we had more carpet and, surprisingly, I don’t care for the feeling of carpet on my bare feet, but I do like the feel of wood floors.

Being barefoot has its hazards though, especially in a farm house. The dog, the sheep, the goats and other critters have walked on my feet, which is fairly minor. The fact that I drop things on my feet and kick things are the major problems.

Several years ago, I dropped a cube of butter on my foot. It left a huge bruise on top of my foot and caused me pain for several days. Another time, I dropped an empty coffee cup on my foot and broke a toe.

The bottoms of my feet take a beating, too. I broke a jar several months ago. I swept the floor well and vacuumed to get the shards out of the imperfections on our pine plank floor. About a week later I pivoted on one foot, which happened to be right on a seam between two planks, and — you guessed it! — found a shard of glass. I hopped to my chair and managed to get it out, but man, that hurt!. The floor in our living room is getting to the point it needs another coat of finish: there are a few spots lacking any and, last month, I got a sliver in my foot from one of the bare patches on the floor.

Oh, and rocks. Whenever there is some snow, but the gravel is showing around the house, the dog packs rocks into the house on her feet. It isn’t only her because I think Rick and I do, too — mostly me since I don’t always take my boots off at the door (Rick always comes in the back door and takes his boots off on the porch). But nevertheless, we get rocks on the floor. From tiny specks of sharp sand to fairly good sized sharp gravel, I seem to find every one. Thank goodness Rick sweeps the floor every morning or I would always be sore footed.

The latest occurred a few days ago when I was filling our box of “night wood,” which is the wood to put in the fire throughout the night to keep it going. I grabbed a pretty good size chunk of split cottonwood, but it slipped out of my fingers and — you guessed it —landed right on my foot. My foot is several different colors right now and raising my toes is quite painful.

And what does Rick say about my poor feet? He rolls his eyes and says, “You know if your wore shoes or slippers in the house ... ”

But then he sweeps more often and tries harder to get the wood in. He really tries to protect my feet from me. I am so blessed.

Easy Cassava Flour Waffles

2 eggs

1 cup cassava flour

1 ¼ cup milk (plant or regular, I used buttermilk)

1 teaspoon baking soda

2 tablespoons melted butter, coconut oil or ghee

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Non-stick spray

Combine all ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth. Preheat waffle maker and spray with non-stick spray. Cook waffles. I found these to be the best gluten-free waffles I have found. And the leftovers stayed soft. I had the cold leftover ones with peanut butter that night for supper.
