A strong start to the school year

As the new superintendent of Big Horn County School District No. 4, I couldn’t be more proud of how smoothly our first two weeks of school have gone. It’s been an exciting beginning to the year, and I’ve been continually impressed by the professionalism, organization, and enthusiasm displayed by our entire staff.

From day one, it was clear that months of planning and preparation had paid off. Our custodial and maintenance staff worked tirelessly over the summer to ensure our buildings, grounds and facilities were spotless and welcoming. Their efforts created a clean, safe and beautiful learning environment that students and staff alike have greatly appreciated.

Operations across the board have run remarkably well. Our bus drivers have done an outstanding job making sure students arrive safely and on time, while our cafeteria workers have provided nutritious meals with warm smiles and efficiency (both even adjusted on the fly to changes due to a power outage to start the month of September). These essential services often go unnoticed, but they are the foundation of a successful school day—and we’re fortunate to have such dedicated individuals in these roles.

Our paraprofessionals have brought incredible energy and compassion to their work. Whether supporting students in classrooms, helping with bus duty, playing with children on the playground, or lending a hand in the lunchroom, their positive presence is felt throughout the district. They truly help make school a joyful and supportive place for all students.

One of the most encouraging aspects of this new school year has been seeing our teaching staff in action. Our teachers came into the year exceptionally well-prepared, with thoughtful lesson plans, engaging classroom activities, and a strong commitment to student success. New staff members have jumped in with both feet, working hard and already blending in like seasoned professionals. The support and mentorship they’ve received from veteran teachers speak volumes about the collaborative and welcoming culture here in BHSD #4. I think that we hit it out of the ballpark with our recruitment and hiring efforts.

Special recognition must go to our building secretaries, Melissa and Skye, whose outstanding organizational skills have been instrumental in keeping everyone informed and on track. Their weekly announcements are thorough, timely, and a reflection of our district’s strong commitment to communication and transparency. These messages have quickly become a trusted and appreciated resource for staff and families alike.

Of course, the heart of any school is its students—and it has been truly rewarding to see their enthusiasm as they returned to the classroom. The energy in our hallways is contagious. Students are happy to be back (most of them anyway), reconnecting with friends, engaging in their learning, and thriving in the social and academic environment that only a school can provide. Their joy in simply being together reminds us all why we do this work.

Our activity programs are also off to a promising start. Athletic teams have good numbers and are well coached. Students can participate and compete in so many activities that almost everyone can find something that they may love or want to try. These activities help students grow physically, emotionally, socially and academically. They help students discover who they are and who they can become. Their dedication to these activities is commendable, and we look forward to watching them compete.

In just two short weeks, I’ve witnessed firsthand the passion, collaboration, and care that define this district. I feel incredibly fortunate to be a part of the Big Horn #4 community and look forward to working alongside our amazing staff, students, families, and community members as we continue striving for excellence together.

Here’s to a fantastic school year ahead!
