Huskies take down Farson-Eden on the road

Coming off a couple losses for the Huskies, Coach Trent Aagard is taking time to reflect. “I have to remind myself that we are a lot more inexperienced this year than we have been in a while, so we need to be a little bit patient as these guys are still figuring a few things out.” 

Burlington seems to be on the road to figuring those things out and added a couple wins to the books this past week. The JV took on Rocky Mountain at home Monday and won 22-21. The varsity team was scheduled to play Kaycee, but Kaycee had to forfeit because of a lack of players and Burlington was able to pick up a game with Farson-Eden, whose opponent also had to forfeit. 

“Farson is a much improved team from where they’ve been the last few years,” said Aagard. “They had a couple of good running backs and they played hard. We came out and had a good initial drive. We marched down the field and scored, which is something we have been able to do this year. But after that, we kind of have a little bit of a drop. This week, I felt we did a better job of fighting through that and overcoming it.” 

Burlington scored 14 points in the first half and 22 points in the second half with two rushing touchdowns from Kole Walker and three receiving touchdowns from Matthew Tempany. “In the second half, I saw real growth happening for several of our guys. That was really encouraging,” said Aagard. “We still have things we need to improve on, but this was a good game to see some things come together.

“Offensively, I thought Kole Walker and Parker Cook ran hard. The line did a much better job of blocking. It was good to see Matt (Tempany), Taft (Winters), Trig (Aagard) and James (McNiven) make some big catches for us. Asher Loveland came in and played well as a freshman. He and Kole both looked more comfortable throwing the ball this week. 

“Defensively, I thought we made progress as the game went on. It was kind of the same cast of contributors as on offense. We didn’t give up a lot of big plays. I’m hoping we can build on this and learn what we need to do better. Anytime you can go on the road and win at Farson, we will take it,” said Aagard. 

The Huskies host Ten Sleep Friday with middle school kickoff at noon and varsity at 2 p.m.

RECEIVING – Matthew Tempany, 4 catches for 60 yards and 3 touchdowns; James McNiven, 4 for 57 yards, Taft Winters, 4 for 28; Aagard, 2 for 26 yards; Loveland, 1 for 28. 

DEFENSIVE STANDOUTS – Tempany led the Huskies with 24.5 points (8 solo tackles, 8 assisted tackles and a shared tackle for loss), followed by Walker with 21 points (6 solo tackles and 9 assisted tackles).
