Heart of the Frontier Art Show colored a hit

Sixty-eight pieces of art were judged last week for the Skillman Art Production Inaugural Heart of the Frontier Art Show in Greybull. 

Over 100 people came to the show reception on June 9. They came from the Big Horn Basin and beyond. Including tourists from parts unknown who were surprised and thrilled to find an art show of this caliber in small town Wyoming. 

Deanna Skillman said that there were 188 votes cast for the People’s Choice Award. The winner was Rebecca Kinane for her 2D painting titled “The silver queen-a tribute to 399.” The grizzly was and still is one of the most well-known grizzlies in Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks. She was struck and killed by a vehicle in 2024. 

First place in photography went to Elizabeth Wood. Her photo of an indigenous woman in ceremonial attire was titled “Pride.” 

Best of show and a blue ribbon was awarded to Karen Barton for her 2 D painting called “Final Crossing.” The painting showed a moose crossing a stream of water with a forest fire raging in the background. 

Roxanna Massoudi’s 2D graphic of a woman with weathered hands braiding her own white hair received a blue ribbon. It sold at the event. 

The 3D blue ribbon was won by Shirley Kershner for her beaded cow skull. 

There were five judges which included Cami Smith, Robert Skillman, Deanna Skillman and Talysa Klein.   The judges voted on elements such as originality/creativity, technical skill, element of design and emotional impact.

Skillman and her husband Robby were very happy about the amount of art as well as the attendance. They are hoping for a bigger and better one next summer. 

While some of the art sold the night of the reception the majority pieces are still available for purchase. The exhibit runs through Sept. 12, 2026, at 513 Greybull Ave in Greybull.
