Standard time or daylight time?
I have written several times about my disgust of the time change. I admit that I don’t like it at all. Now the congress is talking about making it permanent one way or the other. I don’t know how that will play out, but I am researching sun lamps just in case.
Permanent daylight savings time was tried once before during the 70’s. It failed miserably, the outrage was vast and viral. The safety of school students was the biggest push for the repeal at that time. Now there are many studies showing the health affects of the later mornings. The confusing of melatonin and serotonin levels, the upsetting of our circadian rhythm, the belief that doing this will result in much more caffeine intake. These things are real; they are worth taking into consideration.
One of the things that confuses me is the premise that daylight savings time is for the farmers. I suppose for those who work a job off of the farm it does help get things done, but most full time farmers work daylight tell 0 dark 30 anyway and so it isn’t going to have any effect on them. Even those who work the farm after a full-time job have lights on their tractors, which makes that less of a problem than it could be.
As an ancient senior citizen, I can actually remember a time when standard time was universal. I hear people now who are concerned about kids doing chores after school, etc. We had a lot of chores to do and even though the bus dropped us at about 4:30 p.m., we always seemed to get our chores done by the time it got fully dark.
As a person who suffers from Seasonal Affective Disorder I can say that the sun coming up at nearly 9 a.m. from the middle of December until the middle of February is going to cause me some issues. I know that not a lot of people have this disorder and in fact I didn’t know I had it until I was in my 20s. I think because the sun shines so much more here than in Missoula, Mont. in the winter. That is where it really reared its ugly head. The thing is that for those of us who do have it, the later sunrises (9:50 a.m. at my kitchen on December 21) is going to certainly give us something to deal with.
All I can say is that if the bill passes to make it permanent, I may have to become a Hobbit in the winter, because no one will want to be around me. I will be permanently grumpy.
You have all been warned.
My favorite comfort food snack.
Brazilian bread puffs
2 eggs
2/3 cup milk
2/3 cup oil
1 teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons Parmesan cheese
Place all ingredients in a blender, blend until smooth. Pour into well-sprayed mini muffin cups and bake for 20-25 minutes at 350º
I usually make a half a batch, it is easy to cut the recipe in half and that will make 24 puffs.
Scotchy and I will eat all of them in one sitting.
