‘Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much’
The above headline is a Helen Keller quote. It certainly applies to the Food Bank of Wyoming’s Mobile Food Pantry on Saturday.
More than a dozen volunteers showed up at the fairgrounds, helped unload the cases of fresh food, dry goods and the 200 plus prepacked food boxes.
Even with that many people, it took almost the full two hours to get things organized and divided out. Four people dedicated themselves to just opening the giant bags of onions to put in small grocery bags so they could be distributed. Cases and cases of fresh peaches had to be sorted and placed in boxes to distribute. I don’t want to see zucchini squash for a long time as I spent over an hour taking it out of a huge cardboard box and putting into the boxes with the peaches.
Many of our local volunteers are 65 years old plus. I wonder if those in line who see us old folk carrying out heavy boxes to the tables ever think about helping? Especially the spry ones under 55.
Last Saturday, two people did get of their vehicles, came in the building and helped breakdown some of the cardboard. We are so grateful they did.
In the next couple of weeks, we are going to run a behind-the-scenes story in this paper about the mountainous work our local volunteers do. Plus, a look at all the work the Wyoming Food Bank does before sending a loaded semi this way.
In the meantime, if you see one of the Food Bank volunteers, be sure you thank them. Heck, we need to thank every volunteer we see unselfishly giving in so many areas in our communities. Many are unrecognized heroes that together do so much.
