Champber Chat: Christmas light viewing a long tradition in Basin

Thank you to all who put up Christmas lights. If you need a pick-me-up, get out and see them. Families loading up in a vehicle and driving the streets of Basin has been a family tradition for decades and decades. I would venture to guess that it has been since the 1930s.

When our youngest, Makaila, was 13 she decided she wanted a dog.  
She was very serious about taking on the role of pet owner and eagerly explored different breeds in hopes of finding the perfect pet. After hours of research, she had narrowed down her dream dog to either a Labrador Retriever or German Shepard.
Knowing that either breed would be a good fit for our girl, we mused as she listed out the pros and cons of each and made plans to save money so she could buy a puppy from a breeder.

Advent is about waiting; not so much about waiting for Christmas, for there really is none of that during Advent, no waiting for Christmas. The world cannot wait, and so, to the world, it has been Christmas for quite a while already. Well, there are those who know that there is a thing called “Advent”, and call their pre-Christmas Christmas activities “Advent”, probably out of a sense that it sounds more Christian.

The holidays are here which makes us think of winter, are we in “real” winter, or is this third fall? We certainly had first winter in October, then we got a wonderful second fall. Then another shot of winter and now even though it is cold in the mornings the weather is more fall-like than winter-like. So is this third fall or is it real winter that is just open and nice, a rare occurrence I might add.
There are signs that it is real winter.

Hope to see you all this Saturday in Basin for the annual Christmas Bazaar and Little Shoppers. Both start at 9 a.m. Kids 10 and under may shop for up to 10 gifts for just $1 each. People to help the kids shop would be appreciated, as parents/guardians aren’t allowed in the shopping area. Show up at 8:30 a.m. to learn the ropes. Little Shoppers ends at noon. The bazaar ends at 2 p.m.

For some reason we had a horrible infestation of mice last week, one morning we caught six in traps. Normally we catch one every few days, and maybe catch none at all for weeks at a time. Last week though they were thick, we set up our repeater traps and were catching two or three every night in them too. I don’t know what caused it but they were just thick.

December 7, 1941 is a “date that will live in infamy” as stated by President Theodore Roosevelt in his famous speech after the events of the Pearl Harbor bombing.  That event led to the United States involvement in World War II.  President Roosevelt’s speech was a call to arms and a declaration of war against this act of aggression by a foreign nation.  He never wanted us to forget what happened.  President Roosevelt concluded his speech by saying “With confidence in our armed forces, with the unbounding determination of our people, we will gain the inevitable

Many years ago, our government teamed up with the universities, colleges and special interest groups and introduced science into our wildlife and its habitats. Since this time, especially over the last 30 years, our deer herds, upland game birds and our waterfowl populations have been and still are being depleted.
