Prairie Doc® Perspective: Kindness is the best medicine

My name is Joanie Holm. I am a certified nurse practitioner in Brookings, South Dakota and I am the person fortunate to have been the life partner of the original Prairie Doc, Richard P. Holm, M.D.  Rick and I were married for 40 years before his passing in March of 2020.
During those wonderful decades together, if I could point to one powerful action that strengthened our relationship with each other, with our family, our community and with our patients, it would be the act of kindness.

I enjoy reading a newspaper cover to cover. While reading the Basin and Greybull papers, I have noticed some trends in the local police forces, Basin, Greybull, and Manderson.

Wyoming Staycations are a win/win

During the peak of Covid-19, the Basin Area Chamber of Commerce started a Facebook page called Wyoming Staycation. The goal of the page was to help travel industry businesses that were impacted by fewer people coming to the state due to Covid. The page asked Wyoming residents to frequent those businesses to help make up for the losses.

Every so often, we review where we have come from and where we are going – an historical review of our lives.  My 90-year-old mother-in-law passed last August and left me the family pictures to sort and share.  I have been working on digitizing them so every child’s family can have a copy of them all instead of only one or two.  I have held pictures and letters in my hands that were over 100 years old.  This portion of our family has a rich history!

Spring has finally arrived, and by next week it will be summer

I am always slower than a lot of folks about getting my garden in and, this year, I am really glad. The stuff I did have planted was not damaged by the frost at all, but I have friends and neighbors that weren’t so lucky. Asparagus was frozen, one neighbor told me. Another said his potatoes had gotten frosted back twice. Others had the majority of their gardens bit by the late frost.
