Program matches teens, mentors for big-game hunt

CODY - Take on a new challenge and hobby this fall - and maybe even bring home some meat for the freezer. Kids ages 12-17, women and families in the Big Horn Basin who want to learn to hunt are invited to apply for a mentored hunting program that culminates with a fall hunt for a doe white-tailed deer. Applications are due by May 13.

Riverside trapshooters improve in week two

In its second week of competition, the Riverside High School trap team posted the most improved score in the conference and was one of only three teams in the conference that bettered its score in week two.
McKenzie Potter was the lone Rebel to rank and stands in 11th on the female side.

Burlington trap team retains fourth in conference

Burlington had another strong week in the 2nd week of competition shooting, despite the gusty spring winds. “Everyone shot well,” said Coach Nate Kreider. “Scores were not as high as last week for some, but they were all solid scores. Weather always plays a part in how well things go. There is always something new for the athletes to adjust to and overcome.
“Kole (Walker) had a good week, leading the team scores and Chute (Cauffman) found his stride this week and rounded out our top five.”

Burlington track gearing up for regional

The Burlington Huskies joined 23 other teams at the Bobcat Invitational in Thermopolis on Friday. The Lady Huskies placed eighth in the overall team competition and the Huskies placed sixth. “This is always one of our most enjoyable meets,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “Most teams consider it ‘pre-regionals,’ as we try to narrow down the events that our athletes will be doing in Shoshoni this weekend. A lot of teams are there, including some 1A teams from the south that we haven’t seen this year.”

Rebels show more progress in final regular season competition

The Riverside Rebels didn’t have a full lineup for Friday’s Bobcat Invitational, with some away enjoying the senior trip and others prepping for prom.  But with nine of them already assured of trips to Casper, the pre-regional meet didn’t take on the same importance that it did for some teams.

Strohschein sets school record in 200 By Nathan Oster

Senior Ty Strohschein set a new school record in the 200 at Saturday’s Rocky Mountain Invitational, crossing the finish line in 22.73 seconds.
Beckett Hinckley had held the previous record, a 22.75, for four decades.  
Prior to Saturday, Strohschein’s best had been a 22.88.
It was part of a three-win day for the Riverside standout, as he won not only the 200 but also the 100 and was part of the triumphant 400-meter relay team.

McNiven wins at Wyoming State Classic

The Wyoming State Classic, sometimes called “The Best of the Best,” was held Friday in Casper.  
Class 1A through 4A athletes with the top eight times or distances in the state are invited to compete. In some field events and distance races, when distances or times are close, a few more are invited to participate.
“It’s quite an honor to have one of the top eight performances in the state,” said Coach Ryan Olson. “This year we got to bring four athletes, the most we’ve ever had.”

The Wyoming Clay Target League held its first  week of competition this past week. Burlington’s team shot Tuesday evening and Coach Nate Kreider thought it went well. “Everyone’s scores have been improving,” he said. “Individual scores have improved dramatically from last season.”
The top five individual scores for the week went to: 1, Hunter Aagard, 44/50; 2, Brikton Wardell and Wyatt Kasprowicz, 40/50; 3, Kole Walker 38/50; 4, Chase Allen, 33/50; 5, Parker Cook, 32/50.

Riverside trap team completes first week of competition

Riverside competed in Competition Week 1 of the Wyoming Clay Target League.
“I felt the first week went pretty well,” said Coach Calvin Brown. “Most of the kids are showing improvement.”
Riverside’s top five individual athletes were: 1, Avery Clifford 32/50; 2, Ridge Lewis 32/50; 3, Cal Reuter, 29/50; 4, Lane Owen 26/50 and 5, Hayden Paxton 26/50.
Overall, Riverside ranked seventh in the Conference.
McKenzie Potter is tied for 12th on the girls’ side of competition.

SBH Little League numbers strong as new season nears

Participation in the South Big Horn County Little League baseball program continues to be strong, with 129 players signed up to play on 12 teams starting next month.
While those numbers are down from last year’s record participation of 136 players and 13 teams, they still top the 2022 and 2021 seasons.
The league has formed four T-ball teams — Brewers, Pirates, Red Sox and Diamondbacks — and four coach-pitch teams — Royals, Astros, Rockies and Cardinals.
