Don’t forget to get your eyes checked

If you ever played baseball, you may have been told to “keep your eye on the ball.”  When batting, a baseball player is taught to watch the ball the entire time from when it leaves the pitcher’s hand to when, hopefully, their bat smacks the ball for a hit. It may sound simple, but some pitchers can throw fast and sometimes they throw a curveball. Great hitters use their vision and spot the difference, helping them get a hit. Lose focus, and in the blink of an eye the pitch has whipped past them for a strike.

Do you remember what happened November 4, 1979?

If you are old enough, you likely remember where you were when you heard Iran had taken hostages from our embassy in Iran.  The date was Nov. 4, 1979. Eight servicemen died in the failed rescue attempt. Those men were not the only American military casualties.
At the time, we lived on Whidbey Island, Wash. Dad ran the Naval hospital. My husband was a Marine at Whidbey for schooling, as he was part of the crew on an EA6B aircraft.  The Navy Aviation community on the island was small, close-knit and family.

I tend to like to change recipes because one never knows if a little change might make something better. Rick isn’t as excited about me changing recipes. He finds something that he likes and expects it to be the same every time. Add to my changes the fact that I never write recipes down but tend to cook with a kind of “pinch and palm” method, and some of my “recipes” can get interesting.

I barely noticed that the trees had turned beautiful before the cold came. It might very well be that these two manifestations of autumn actually coincided completely; or perhaps I have just not been paying attention.
I do enjoy the beauty of autumn leaves much more than the cold that comes with it. But so it is in life, is it not? The things we enjoy the most are usually accompanied by things we enjoy a lot less. No autumn cold, no autumn beauty.

Trying to make sense of municipal court listings
Dear Editor:
In my last rant, I questioned the tickets issued (as noted in the Basin Municipal Court publication) for cracked or broken taillights and windshields. It would appear that now we must add “defective mufflers” and “felony parking” to that list.

Adulting takes grit

When I was thinking of what I should write about for this week’s column, I was stumped. My mind kept drawing a blank. I stared at my computer screen waiting for the words to appear far too long. Still, I was unable to come up with an inspirational message or even a funny faux pas, both of which I try to incorporate in my column when I can. The more I thought about my conundrum, the more I realized it is similar to life’s reality.

October 12, 1923
The teachers and the student body of the Basin High School have entered into an arrangement with Mrs. R.L. Silver and Mrs. Peter Enders by which the former will take charge of the High School Orchestra and the latter the High School Glee Club. Little headway is being made with the beet harvest because the fields have been so wet. It is understood that many beet growers are planning on siloing their beets this year, thus enabling them to get them to the dump after the entire crop had been dug.

I feel kind of like the little town that Paul Harvey used to talk about this week. Like Jesup, Georgia, nothing happened on our little corner of the world. So one might say is was quiet. Well, not exactly.
