Curtis Strohschein won the heavyweight division, Ty Strohschein captured second at 175 and Loomis Alexander took third at 138 pounds to lead the surging Greybull-Riverside wrestling squad to a ninth-place finish at last weekend’s Lander Invitational.
The tournament attracted 26 varsity boys teams, with the majority being either 3A or 4A.  The only 2A teams that topped G-R’s 80 points were Thermopolis, which took seventh with 113, and Kemmerer, eighth with 111.5.
“We wrestled a heck of a tournament,” said Coach Rob Nuttall.

Huskies beat Shoshoni in their only tournament win

The Huskies and 10 other teams braved the negative temperatures to compete in the Big Horn Basin Classic this past weekend. The boys’ side of the tournament pitted the Huskies against 2A Greybull, 3A Thermopolis, 2A Wind River and 2A Shoshoni. Burlington was 1-3 on the weekend but Coach Kirby Winland felt it was a great tournament.

Lady Huskies go 3-1 at tournament

The Lady Huskies had a successful weekend at the Big Horn Classic, beating Rocky Mountain, Worland and Wind River while losing only to Lovell. “I always like this tournament because it’s really good competition for us playing 2A and 3A teams. We had our ups and downs but it was a great learning experience and I am very proud of the way that they played,” said Coach Cheryl Haslam. 

Lady Rebels stay cool under pressure, win 58-30

The Lady Rebels triumphed over Fort Washakie on Saturday, 58-30. Brooklynn Paxton and Johnna Clifford led the Rebels in scoring with 26 and 13 points, respectively, with Clifford playing a strong, aggressive style of ball that took her to the free throw line 12 times over the course of the game.
Their propulsive efforts were aided by Vinaya Vanderploeg, of whom Coach Jason Mitchell remarked, “She’s one of the best on-ball defenders I’ve seen in small school girls’ basketball and often the spark that leads to transition baskets for her teammates.”

Lady Huskies defeat Meeteetse

The Burlington Lady Huskies had their first conference game of the year against Meeteetse on Friday in Burlington. Despite a slow start in the first quarter, the Lady Huskies dominated the game, outscoring the Longhorns 40-9 in the first half and winning 57-22.

Rebels drop two-point decision to St. Stephens

The Riverside Rebels shook off a sluggish start, rallying in the second half to take the lead before eventually dropping a two-point decision to St. Stephens.  Ryder Kozisek and Hayden Paxton combined for 49 points in the 70-68 defeat.
It was a tale of two halves. St. Stephens started fast, building leads of 26-11 after one and 43-25 at the half.
“St. Stephens has some really good shooters and we gave them too much space early on,” said Coach Scott Winters.

Huskies fall to Meeteetse despite second half ralley

It was an intense matchup against Meeteetse for the Burlington Huskies on Friday. Jordan Michaels hit a three for the game’s first points, but Meeteetse rallied and led 17-6 after one. “We came out and allowed their shooters too many open looks and as the famous saying goes ‘hand down, man down,’” said Coach Kirby Winland.
